The Colony Grocery Store Colony Jamboree
―
The Grocery Store was run for decades by the Payne family. It closed in 1970’s. In the 1980’s, Cinda Barnes turned it into the Colony Jamboree. When she moved the Jamboree to Clinton, the building was virtually abandoned. Thanks to a MODA grant and the craftmanship of Martin Pitman, it has a new roof and new windows, and plans for a full restoration.
Murals by Eric Tippeconnic, PhD, a nationally recognized artist and history professor, has brought the building back to life. In the summer of 2017, he completed a mural on the west side of the building titled, “The Horse Captors”. He returned Thanksgiving of 2018 to paint “The Hunt.”
Now, it is ready for inside renovation.
What we’ve accomplished:
1.
Two Murals have been painted on the East and West sides of the building. It is our hope that people from around the world will visit Colony to see these wonderful murals.
2.
The aging roof was repaired and replaced giving this building life for generations to come.
3.
Pursuing grants will hopefully allow for renovations to the flooring and building structure. This will allow the return of a musical entertainment space, along with a community storm shelter.
